10 Sep 2021

Tips & Tricks for Positive Engagement with Taikura Trust – How to Get the Most out of your NASC is a workshop with Tony McLean from Imagine Better – hosted by Disability Connect.

Disability Connect says:

The doorway to the Disability Support System (DSS) is via the local Needs Assessment Service Co-ordinator (NASC). In Tāmaki-makau-rau, this agency is called Taikura Trust.
Initial engagement with Taikura Trust determines a person’s eligibility for access to DSS services and then assesses the persons disability related needs and allocates DSS funded supports as is indicated.
Engaging with this system may sound straight forward but it is often fraught with difficulties and challenge for individual disabled people and or their family/whanau.
Even after many years of engagement with the NASC, individuals and their families can remain frustrated, uncertain and even angry and deeply upset.
Understanding how the NASC works, its functions and how to engage positively with the staff who are the face of the system, enables people to achieve much more positive outcomes. It also reduces conflict and angst from both sides of the fence.
These sessions have been developed to assist disabled people and their family/whanau understand how the NASC works and how they can engage with it in as positive and proactive way as possible.
