Connor Adamson has ticked off his goal to complete Round the Bays Wellington 2025.

The Cerebral Palsy Society member took part in the 8.4km event on February 16.

It took Connor, who is GMFCS level 2 and uses a walking stick, just under 3 hours to complete the course.

He prepared for the event over a period of months by focusing on stretching and walking. Each week he would do a few short walks and one long walk to slowly build up the distance.

Connor says he was feeling a mix of apprehension and excitement at the start line.

Connor says it was great to have friends and family with him at the event.
“It definitely made the experience more fun.”

“I was excited to see how far my training had taken me and to see how fast I would be during the event itself.”

The host of the Society’s Wellington coffee group walked the route with his dad, cousin and friend and he had more family seeing him off at the start line and meeting him at the finish.

He says his physiotherapist was a huge help in terms of setting a training schedule and exercises.

Connor says he felt good during the walk until fatigue started to kick in around the 5km mark.

The last 3.4km were a bit of a slog.”

Connor crosses the finish line.

He’s pleased with how he did and how his training got him through the event with a good time.

Connor wants to help build the Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi community in Wellington and says while he realises an event like Round the Bays is not everybody’s cup of tea, he is keen to connect with others over things like board games or something less physical.

“If you want to meet other people with Cerebral Palsy, reach out to the Cerebral Palsy Society and let them know.”
