Romance, sexuality and Cerebral Palsy

29 Apr 2025

Romance and sexuality can be considered off limits or taboo subjects in some areas of society. The disability and Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi community is no exception.

Typically, the concerns are around physical and psychological safety and the perceived ability to communicate effectively.

However, perspectives on these notions are slowly changing and starting to acknowledge the fact that everyone with Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi grows up and experiences the full range of feelings and expectations around being an adult who may seek romance, relationships and social connections.

There is no doubt that living with Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi can and does provide complicated elements especially for the individual who is starting to navigate this space. Still, with the help of individuals and their families, conversations, resources, and narratives are beginning to take shape that use relationships, romance, and connection as just another aspect of life, irrespective of whether they have a disability.

Our friends at My CP Guide have a firm and steadfast commitment to providing resources and information on all areas of Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi across the lifespan including the topics that are viewed as “uncomfortable” for some. They have put together a series of videos talking about different elements of sex, gender, dating and healthy relationships and the ways in which adults with Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi navigate the space.
